Specimen Gold Earrings. Unlike placer gold, specimen gold comes directly from a matrix material such as quartz. It has not been washed down into streams and creeks and thus it is as it appears naturally - its edges have not been smoothed or rounded by the action of water as is the case with placer gold. This gold is usually found by hard rock mining or breaking of the matrix material and can also be located by using a metal detector or by finding material that has the gold running through it in "veins."
