Mountain Maidu and Pioneers

This is Pat Kurtz's 2010 reworking of her Master's Thesis, initially written in 1963 and compiled from interviews of both Maidu and pioneer informants, research from early books, newspapers, diaries, and journals. Beginning with the geographical description of Indian Valley, the book continues with descriptions of Mountain Maidu life upon the arrival of whites searching for gold and the eventual conflicts and changes that ensued. Also covered are the stories of those who continued to practice their cultural traditions.
