Following the Beckwourth Trail

During the 1840s and later, emigrants began to make their way across the Plains to California, creating a system of wagon roads and pack trails. The Beckwourth Trail was one such road. Discovered around 1850 by African-American James Pierson Beckwourth, a mountain man, explorer, trader, guide, scout, interpreter, and later war chief of the Crow Indians, the trail branched off the main California road at Truckee Meadows (now Sparks and Reno, NV) and ended at Bidwell's Bar, a mining camp now under the waters of Lake Oroville, in Butte County, CA. Today, thanks to the mapping of the route by Andrew and Joanne Hammond of the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA), and the marking of the trail by Trails West, Inc., you can follow portions of Beckwourth's wagon road by car and on foot.
