Description

This book by local author, Heidi Sheehan-Marsh chronicles the lost art of making 3-foot long wooden shakes from Sugar Pine trees. These shakes were used for both siding and roofing and can be seen on many cabins and other structures scattered through the mining districts of Plumas and Sierra counties. The author's father, Forest Sheehan, grew up making shakes, and his father and grandfather made shakes before him and Heidi and her brothers learned from their father. This well-documented book is filled with family photos of shake making and covers the process of making the shakes and their uses very thoroughly and is a great tribute to this long-lost art and the people who produced millions of shakes during the last 150 years. A wonderful look into a lost mountain industry! Profusely illustrated throughout with color and b/w photos. Spiral (comb) bound: 100 pages: 8.5 x 11"
