Poster: Ko'domyeponi: The Worldmaker's Journey

This full color map follows the journey of the Maidu Worldmaker, Ko’domyeponi as he traveled through the region of the Mountain Maidu, slaying monsters and evil beings that would make life difficult for humans who were soon to appear on the earth. The version shared on this map is distinct to the Honey Lake Maidu, narrating their particular history. The Peconom family has told their account of K’odomyeponi’s journey for generations, sharing their story of how the Creator formed the world in which they live. Like a finely made basket, the story of Ko’domyeponi’s Journey interweaves the shape and form of features in the landscape with experiences and memories, shaping their identity as Maidu people. With each retellilng of Ko’domyeponi’s Journey, the Mountain Maidu renew the world first traversed by the Creator and reaffirm their place in it. This map follows the Earthmaker’s journey from the area around present-day Quincy, CA., to beyond the eastern limits of Honey Lake Valley. Shows Maidu homesites/villages, important places along Creator’s path, lakes, etc. and gives Maidu names of places and features with English translations.
